https://www.gofundme.com/frankiewheelchair We are doing a happy dance here at Joyful Paws headquarters! Why? Because Alex is the 50th dog the Frankie Wheelchair Fund has granted a wheelchair to! Alex is currently with foster, Sandi, with Dachshund Rescue of South Florida. She sent me ths picture of Alex and said, “Here’s a pic of sweet n snugly Alex in his Eddie’s Wheels. He took to his wheels like a duck to water!” Does not surprise me one bit. I’ve seen time and time again how these dogs get on with the joy of living life — now rolling through the grass, down the street, and over their human’s feet. Nothing stops them! A very special thanks to Sarah of The Smoothe Store as the money she raised selling dog banandas last fall helped pay for Alex’s wheelchair which she donated to the Frankie Wheelchair Fund. Alex’s wheelchair custom made by Eddie’s Wheels. Keep on rolling Alex! Subscribe to Updates Show More  [keep reading...]

Just before the Trackless Train Trek Half Marathon began in Elkmont, April Hamlin let her Bloodhound, Ludivine, outside to go to the bathroom, Runners World reported. Ludivine wandered off the property and joined the runners lined up at the starting point of the race. In spite of some distractions (a dead rabbit, a dog in the cheering area along the course, a field of livestock) along the way, she managed to run the entire 13.1 miles and finished seventh with a time of 1:32:56. She was awarded with a finisher’s medal. “She’s laid back and friendly, so I can’t believe she ran the whole half marathon because she’s actually really lazy,” Hamlin told Runner’s World, adding that this race is the first in the town and was started by  [keep reading...]

Lovesick dog walks 10k to see Naples sweetheart The Dachshund travelled 10km to be with his love. Photo: Scott Beale Lovesick dog walks 10k to see Naples sweetheart They say love knows no distance, but when hearts are yearning, sometimes the only option is to bridge the gap: that’s exactly what Toto, a Dachshund, or sausage dog, did when he dodged traffic to cross two Campania provinces in search of his love. Toto who lives in the town of Scafati, in Salerno, met Lilly, a fellow Dachshund, this summer when their respective owners struck up a friendship while on holiday. When the dogs clapped eyes on eachother, it was love at first sight and they became inseparable, with Toto spending some time at Lilly’s home in the Naples town of Casola, Metropolisweb.it reported. But Toto soon had to return home, plunging him into the depths of despair. “His eyes became sad, he could no longer see his sweetheart,” the news  [keep reading...]

How to know if your dog has Cushing's Disease and Diabetes. What is Cushing's Cushing's Disease (or syndrome) occurs when the adrenal glands produce excess amounts of cortisol, also known as cortisone. Cushing's is also known as hyperadrenocorticism. Hyper = above normal; adreno = relating to the adrenal glands; corticism = relating to the cortex & cortisol production. So, Cushings is a disease of elevated cortisol production by the adrenal cortex. Cushing's is much more common in dogs than in cats, so this page focuses on Cushings in dogs. http://www.wikihow.com/Hold-a-Dachshund-Properly Edit Article How to Hold a Dachshund Properly Two Methods:Holding a Dachshund SafelyKnowing What to Avoid Dachshunds (also known as "wiener dogs") are known for their long body, short legs, and floppy ears. While these adorable dogs make great household companions, their unusual proportions can make them delicate — their long spines are especially sensitive. This means that extra care must be taken to support the dog's back as you pick it up, hold it, and set it back down.[1] Method 1 of 2: Holding a Dachshund Safely Hold a Dachshund Properly Step 1 Version 2.jpg 1 Place one hand under the chest. Picking up a dachshund is different than the way you'd pick up other breeds, but it's not especially hard once you learn the right method. Is a dachshund right for you and your family?

By |2015-06-15T08:00:59-07:00June 15, 2015|News, Photos, Stories|

Is a dachshund right for you and your family? Curious, lively, charming, and brave, the Dachshund is similar to a terrier in his demands to be in on everything. This comical clown loves to play games and has a great sense of humor. He is a loyal little dog, very attached to his family, and he firmly believes that sleeping under the bedcovers is in the Dachshund Bill of Rights. Dachshunds attract devoted followers who would never consider having any other breed. Indeed, Dachshunds are often kept in pairs, which is A-OK with them, since they seem to recognize and prefer being with other "wiener dogs". They're usually good with other family pets, too, though they can be jealous when they want attention and they can be possessive of their toys. You need to put a firm stop to the first signs of jealousy or possessiveness so that these don't become bad habits. Though the Dachshund makes a great house  [keep reading...]
