How About a Hot Dog on a Bench?

A dachshund sitting by himself on a park bench

Hank looking imperious while sitting on his bench by the fish pond

Being 10 years old, Hank doesn’t have the energy 4-month-old Hercules does.

In fact, except for rare occasions like the doorbell ringing or the sound of a dog treat bag opening, Hank would rather find a nice sunny spot and enjoy a nap.

Unfortunately for Hank, Hercules loves nothing more than waiting until Hank has drifted off to sleep before pouncing on him.

The result is that Hank has to find spots where Hercules can’t get to just yet. Places like the back of the couch, the cushions in the window box, and the bench by the fish pond in the front yard.

The bench is particularly nice not simply because Hercules doesn’t have the leaping ability to get up there just yet, but because it warms in the sun in the morning, and gives back that warmth in the shade of the afternoon.

You can tell when Hank’s especially comfortable because he’ll lay down on his side and stretch out like the Slinky Dog toy I had as a kid. Sometimes it looks like he’s almost long enough to touch both ends of the bench.

Ah, well. Enjoy it while you can Hank. It won’t be much longer until Herc can spring up there and scare the living bejeezus out of your slumbering self.

Happy National Hot Dog Day!
