A Hot Day for a Hot Dog

Dachshunds racing

Some dachshunds don’t want any part of the racing circuit

Yesterday was National Hot Dog Day which reminded me of the time we took the doxie pack to the Wiener Nationals Dachshund races.

It was really fun to see hundreds of dachshunds of all sizes and colors running through the fields having the time of their lives.

As for the actual wiener races, I was pretty sure Rommel would take first place as he was faster than a bullet. Franzi and Montgomery I wasn’t as sure of.

When it came down to race time, however, all three surprised me.

Franzi was the first to race. She shot out of the starting gate, immediately veered right across all the lanes, and stole a hot dog a kid was eating right out of her hands.

Montgomery, always shy, cowered behind the starting gate and never budged even as I called him from the other end of the track.

Rommel raced last. He was very antsy when we put him in his starting gate. He charged the closed gate a couple of times making me think he would be a bolt of lighting once it opened.

When the gate did swing open, all the dachshunds burst off the starting line except Rommel. He turned, jumped over the back of the gate and ran to the car where he remained for the rest of the event.

Rommel would rather stay in the car than race on a hot day

Just too hot for him, I guess. Ah well, he’s not a racing dog. Lesson learned.

I'm a certifiable dachshund fanatic and lover of anything that involves doxies. I have five — Rommel, Franzi, Montgomery, Hank, and Hercules — plus two German Shepherds, Noet and Sunna, who think they're dachshunds.
