I Think We’re Being Watched

A dog's head peering above the back of a couch

Hercules watching me make dinner from his sneaky observation position

While preparing dinner last night, I noticed that I didn’t have eight little feet and a couple of tail dancing around my legs as I moved between the counter and the stove.

Strange…

So, while the pasta steamed in the water I set out to locate my dachshund cooking companions, Hank and Hercules.

I found Hank sleeping on the couch under a pile of blankets on top of which was Kane the cat. Cats are warm and Hank is burrowed in. Ok.

But where is Herc?

I looked in the living room, the bedrooms, the front yard and all of his usual spots. No Hercules.

So, I went back to the kitchen to check the pasta. Then I noticed something. Looking over the counter into the living room I saw movement on the love seat.

I waited.

Then, slowly, the top of a small brown head, followed by a pair of floppy ears and two brown eyes appeared above the couch back.

I was being watched!

Sneaky dog, that Hercules. He was laying in wait.

Once I set the table and called for my husband, Hercules sprang into full view and took up his usual spot under the dining room table where he can intercept anything that falls off.
