Has Anyone Seen the Dachshunds Lately? The Great Digging Mystery

Has anyone seen the dachshunds lately? That’s the question that usually means trouble at my house. Because if you can’t find a dachshund, you can bet your favorite garden trowel steam shovel they’re digging.

Dachshunds were bred to go underground after badgers, and that instinct hasn’t gone anywhere — not even after generations of comfy couches and belly rubs. In this video, my two little excavation experts prove it in hilarious fashion.

Why do dachshunds dig so much?

Digging is one of the most natural behaviors for dachshunds. The breed’s very name means “badger dog” in German (Dachs = badger, Hund = dog). They were literally designed to dig tunnels and flush out prey.

Even if your dachshund has never met a badger, that instinct to burrow and dig is still strong. Holes in the garden, blankets piled up into “nests,” or a mysteriously rearranged flower bed, it’s all part of their DNA.

In my case, the mystery went a little deeper. What I thought was one dog digging a suspiciously large hole turned out to be two dachshunds working as a team, one in front, one behind, both covered in dirt and extremely proud of themselves.

How to handle dachshund digging (without losing your yard)

  • Give them an approved digging spot. A corner of the yard filled with soft dirt can channel their instincts.
  • Provide enrichment. Puzzle toys, scent games, and hide-and-seek play sessions satisfy that hunting drive.
  • Avoid punishment. Digging isn’t “bad behavior”, it’s natural. Redirecting it works far better.
  • Keep an eye on them. Because if you can’t find your dachshunds… you know what they’re doing. 😂

I couldn’t even be mad. Watching those two pop out of the dirt while Rommel looked on was too funny. If you want to see more dachshund antics, check out my other posts on dachshund behavior and funny dachshund videos.
