Jupiter and Quackers in the Halloween decor

If you share your home with a dachshund, you already know that “indestructible” isn’t a real word. You probably also know the specific sound of the squeaker inside a toy being systematically hunted down and extracted.

It started like any other afternoon. I handed Jupiter his favorite plushie, Quackers, hoping for a cute photo op. Instead, Jupiter grabbed Quackers, trotted into the living room and proceeded lay right in the middle of my Halloween display to perform a full-scale plushie exorcism.

Within minutes, the living room transformed into stuffed animal crime scene. Stuffing, fabric and threads everywhere. I had to admit; it was tooth and paw work at its absolute finest.

The expression on Jupiter’s face was one of pure innocence—he was simply “customizing” his toy for spooky season. But the cold stare in his eyes, told me he was really creating a scene for his very own horror movie.

What’s left of poor Quackers looks less like a plushie and more like a dead duck Halloween prop.

The Dachshund Toy Rule: Embrace the Mess

Only a dachshund owner will truly understand the joy of the miniature hunt. A 15-pound hound utterly obliterating a stuffed animal, all while looking so incredibly proud of themselves. You can buy the toughest ballistic nylon or reinforced stitching, but when a doxie is determined to de-stuff a toy, resistance is futile. Stuffing flies until the squeaker is extracted and neutralized.

Quick tips for fellow doxie parents this Halloween:

  • Embrace the chaos: Don’t sweep that scattered stuffing. Make it part of your Halloween decor. If anyone asks, tell them they’re “entrails.”
  • Supervise the “customization”: Always keep a close eye while your pup works their magic to make sure squeakers and small bits aren’t swallowed before you can safely remove them. And if a bit does get swallowed, don’t worry. Dog toys are made with non-toxic materials and Dachshunds will pass most anything they can’t digest.
  • Refocus that drive: Remember, dachshunds are hunting dogs, so hunting behavior is something they love. Try interactive puzzle toys or durable rubber chews packed with treats. They’ll give those focused pups and their relentless jaws a productive workout without sacrificing another plushie.

Happy Spooky Season from Jupiter and what’s left of Quackers!

How are your doxies celebrating Halloween this year? Are they rocking cute costumes, or are they running a full-scale toy demolition service?
