November 21, 2014 National Purebred Dog Day® In 1972, Munich’s Summer Games saw the first ever inclusion of an official Olympic mascot in the form of “Waldi,” a Dachshund selected for attributes described as required for Olympic athletes: Resistance, tenacity and agility. “Waldi” was based on Cherie von Birkenhof, a real long-haired Dachshund that Munich Games Organizing Committee President, Willi Daume, had given to Félix Lévitan, the International Sports Press Association President in 1970. “Cherie,” was the model for Waldi’s creator, German designer, Otl Aicher (who also participated in the logo design for German airline, Lufthansa). According to the book, The Olympic Marathon, the 1972 Olympic marathon route corresponded to the shape of the dog-mascot. The head of the dog faced west, with athletes running counter-clockwise starting at the back of the dog’s neck and continuing around the ears. “Waldi’s” mouth was represented by the path going through Nymphenburg Park, its front feet were represented by the run though the Hirschgarten. The number of ground squirrels overrunning The Acre this year is astounding. Franzi following the scent of ground squirrel I don’t know if the dry winter let more survive, or if my neighbor’s newly constructed pool drove them out, or if all the good squirrel predators have changed their tastes, but I am literally stumbling over these rodents and their burrows everywhere. I’ve found them wreaking havoc in the vegetable garden, the keyhole garden, and the greenhouse. This morning there was one chowing down on a cherimoya on my back deck. Since March I’ve trapped more than 40, and spent ungodly amounts on baits, poisons and gasses – all to little or no effect as far as I can tell. It wasn’t always like this though. Once upon a time we had four Dachshunds. Low slung wienerdogs with shovels for front paws and a single-minded determination to dig as far and fast as they could in pursuit of burrowing animals. Happy Birthday! It's Mr. Rommel's 13th birthday today! Wow, how time flies. It seems to me he was only a puppy the other day. Rommel is my very first dachshund and I love him so much. I always wanted a dachshund and I feel lucky to have him live with us. My husband got him for me for our 15th wedding anniversary. I had picked his mane out years before I got him. I’ve been happy with him ever since. I should have known the first day when he came home, what a ball hound he is. Rommel loves to play ball. He will do it for hours if you play with him. Ball is what he likes. If you don’t play with him, he will bark at you until you do. He is always happy to see me and brings me ball. Rommel does sleep with me under my left arm every night. When he is not burrowed under [keep reading...]
https://www.gofundme.com/frankiewheelchair We are doing a happy dance here at Joyful Paws headquarters! Why? Because Alex is the 50th dog the Frankie Wheelchair Fund has granted a wheelchair to! Alex is currently with foster, Sandi, with Dachshund Rescue of South Florida. She sent me ths picture of Alex and said, “Here’s a pic of sweet n snugly Alex in his Eddie’s Wheels. He took to his wheels like a duck to water!” Does not surprise me one bit. I’ve seen time and time again how these dogs get on with the joy of living life — now rolling through the grass, down the street, and over their human’s feet. Nothing stops them! A very special thanks to Sarah of The Smoothe Store as the money she raised selling dog banandas last fall helped pay for Alex’s wheelchair which she donated to the Frankie Wheelchair Fund. Alex’s wheelchair custom made by Eddie’s Wheels. Keep on rolling Alex! Subscribe to Updates Show More [keep reading...]
