The Sun Has Set on Sunna
We said goodbye to our honorary Dachshund last week
It’s been a while since I last posted, not because of anything the dachshunds were doing, but because we lost a member of the pack.
Sunna, our German shepherd, passed quietly last week after a brief illness. While not a dachshund, Sunna was much loved and provided the dachshunds with common sense where they lacked it (leave cats and skunks alone).
Gentle and protective, Sunna often served as a pillow for the rest of the gang, whether it was in front of the TV or on the patio in the sun. And she was a strong, steady enforcer. Where the doxies barked and yipped constantly, Sunna needed only a single, deep “woof” to get her point across; a reminder to coyotes and strangers that while the dachshunds thought they were fierce, she actually was.
Sunna was also a smart dog. She learned to cover her food and keep her treats out of reach of the short-legged ones. She learned to open the gate with her nose and, after receiving a scolding for setting the pack loose on the street a time or two, learned not to do it when the dachshunds were around.
Abandoned with her sister as a puppy, she made her home among the sausage dogs; an “ugly ducking” who grew to be and affectionate family dog. She lived a long, loving life, passing quietly in her sleep at age 15.
She will be deeply missed.
